translations

   
mercury’s paintings begin where others have left off. they utilize discarded and unfinished works from other artists to create alternate narratives. despite the lack of consent mercury’s method is more collaborative than anything else. before taking action mercury considers the history of the found art; imagery, materials, and even artist’s intention. each piece is a unique cache of information- much like the metadata so intrinsic in today’s technology. the translations become a referential web of symbols where each bit of data informs the next. 

   the translations are stripped of any structural backing or hardware. making them thinner, but not necessarily flatter. all the rips, folds, and staple holes become part of the new narrative. the works are hung like tapestries in order to create a drop shadow. similar to the shadows found under browser windows common in computer & phone applications. thus emphasizing their presence as a layer.
